Hydrogel-based delivery systems are known to provide great potential for enhancing pharmaceutical outcomes of drug delivery. Hydrogels can offer spatial and temporal control for the release of various therapeutic agents, including cells, small-molecule drugs, and macromolecular drugs. With their tunable physical properties, manageable degradability, and capability to protect labile drugs from degradation, hydrogels serve as an advanced platform where various physiochemical interactions with the encapsulated drugs are controlled toward the desired target-release.

Injectable hydrogels can be formed in situ by chemical crosslinking, physical crosslinking, and/or both physicochemical approaches. Chemical hydrogels typically require an initiator to trigger the chemical reaction that may affect the biocompatibility of the hydrogels. Physical hydrogels are advantageous in this respect as no chemical reaction is involved. Among the physical hydrogels, the NHYGEL drug delivery platform of NUMAIS is based on the thermo-sensitive polymer aqueous solutions that can easily encapsulate drugs, proteins, and cells with the sol-phase at room temperature and then transform to the viscous gel-phase upon in vivo administration at the physiological temperature.
